Protect Your Family this Summer with these Water Safety Tips

June 04, 2025

Summertime means family fun in the water, whether at the pool, under the sprinklers or even in the local lake or swimming hole. Unfortunately, water-related accidents are common, and as financial professionals, we care about your family and want to help you keep everyone safe (both financially and physically!). So here are some tips for water safety this summer….please forward on to anyone you think would benefit.

  1. Hire a lifeguard: You can hire a certified lifeguard for large parties or events.  If a lifeguard’s not available, designate an adult to watch the pool for a specific amount of time, then rotate so the attention stays focused on the swimmers and their safety.
  2. Pool safety kit: Pack a first aid kit, a heavy duty pair of scissors to cut hair, clothing, or a pool cover, and anything else you might need in case of a water emergency. Pull everything together ahead of time so you can just toss it in your bag on your way out. To make it even easier, you can buy one online that already has first aid supplies, CPR masks and cutting tools.
  3. Pool safety zone: Keep kids away from pipes, drains, filters, and other pool equipment to avoid mishaps. Make sure the pool you’re in has safety drain covers to prevent longer hair from getting caught.
  4. Use flotation devices: Public pools should always have an obviously-placed, throwable flotation device, like a ring buoy. At home, a wearable flotation device like a life jacket can quickly be tossed to someone in distress. If your child isn’t a strong swimmer, don’t rely on water wings or noodles to keep your them safe, use personal flotation devices approved for water safety.
  5. Get CPR-certified: It can absolutely save a life and it’s a great family activity. You can visit the Red Cross website to find a CPR class in your area.
  6. Install pool alarms: Many drownings at home happen when you would least expect it. There are alarms for home exit doors, pool fence entry points and those that sound when someone enters the water in the pool.

Water fun is a great summer activity, but thinking about safety first will help you prevent danger and prepare for the unexpected. We hope you enjoy your family time this summer and have fun making many great (and safe!) memories.
